Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean meat from ham
Provides the main savory, meaty flavor of the sauce.
Bone from ham
Releases flavor and body into the liquid as it simmers.
Beef gravy
Forms the liquid base that carries and thickens the sauce.
Small bundle of sweet herbs
Adds aromatic flavor to the gravy during the gentle stew.

The step that matters

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Meat and gravy scorch and stick easily on a saucepan base. Low heat and constant stirring keep the mash from burning and let flavors develop evenly.
