Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Adds sweetness and colour, and holds its shape as the soup simmers.
Butter
Carries the frying heat and adds richness, helping the vegetables brown.
Stock
Forms the liquid base that carries the flavour of the soup.
Celery
Adds savoury, aromatic flavour to the soup base.

The step that matters

Frying the shredded vegetables until nicely browned. Browning develops deeper flavour through the Maillard reaction, but vegetables cut this fine can scorch quickly over direct heat, so watch them closely and keep the butter moving.
