What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the main body of the soup and provide sweetness and body once softened and strained.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, and helps soften the carrots gently without browning.
Brown gravy soup
Supplies the liquid base and savoury flavour in which the carrots simmer and become tender.

The step that matters

Stew the carrots without browning. Keeping the heat low and the carrots pale preserves a clean, sweet flavour; browning adds bitter, roasted notes that change the soup's intended taste.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotthe original
  4. Onionfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
