Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Forms the base that holds the toppings and crisps when fried.
Butter
Adds richness and promotes browning in the pan as the toast fries.
Grated cheese
Melts into a savory topping that binds with the ham and browns on the surface.
Ham
Adds savory, salty flavor and a meaty texture to the topping.

The step that matters

Fry without turning. Turning the toasts too early can disturb the cheese and ham topping, and the butter needs time to brown the bread evenly on the underside.
