Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Their watery flesh softens during stewing, becoming tender and mild in the gravy.
Flour
Coats the cucumbers so they brown lightly, and thickens the gravy when stirred in.
Butter
Adds fat for frying and richness to the gravy, carrying flavour across the dish.
Brown gravy
Supplies the main liquid and savoury flavour, and the cucumbers absorb it as they stew.

The step that matters

Stewing gently. Cucumbers are mostly water and turn mushy if boiled hard. A gentle simmer keeps them tender while the gravy thickens around them.
