Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rhubarb
Forms the body of the soup and gives its tart flavour.
Onions
Add sweetness and savoury depth as they soften in the butter.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the stewed vegetables.
Bread crumbs
Thicken the soup as they absorb liquid and soften.
Consomme
Provides the main liquid and savoury base of the soup.

The step that matters

Stew gently over low heat until tender. Rhubarb breaks down slowly; high heat can scorch the butter and onions before the fruit softens, leaving a harsh, uneven flavour and texture.

Swap the rhubarb

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, carrot, ham, butter, bread, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
