Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pudding paste
Forms the tender outer crust that encloses the fruit and syrup while steaming.
Apples
Provide the fruit filling, softening into a tender, moist layer when stewed and boiled.
Syrup
Sweetens the apples and adds moisture so the filling stays juicy during boiling.

The step that matters

Seal the paste securely. A loose seal lets water and syrup seep into the mold during boiling, making the pudding soggy and diluting the filling.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, syrup):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Apricotfits better
  3. Peachfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, syrup. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
