Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Make the batter

  1. Weigh the eggs and measure out the same weight of sugar, butter, and flour.

  2. Beat the eggs and mix them thoroughly with the other ingredients.

  3. Grease a pudding tin and pour in the mixture.

Bake and assemble

  1. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for twenty minutes.

  2. Once cooled, slice the cake in half.

  3. Spread jam on one half.

  4. Place the top back on.

  5. Cut into pieces about two inches long.

  6. Arrange on a glass dish.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure and richness as they set in the oven.
Sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps it brown lightly while baking.
Butter
Adds fat for a tender crumb and rich flavour.
Flour
Forms the structure of the cake as its proteins set during baking.
