Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Turnips
Form the bulk of the dish and absorb flavour from the butter and sauce as they stew.
Butter
Browns the turnips and adds richness to the cooking pan.

The step that matters

Browning the turnips in butter. Turnips that are not properly browned stay pale and bland. Browning drives off surface moisture and triggers Maillard reactions, which add savoury, toasted flavour before the sauce is added.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Turnipthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
