Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Goose giblets
Provide the main meaty flavor that the broth is built on.
Beef consommé
Supplies the savory liquid base and concentrated beefy flavor.
Marsala
Adds sweet, fortified wine depth that deepens the broth as it reduces.
Butter
Carries the frying of the giblets and adds richness and browning.
Onion
Adds aromatic sweetness that builds the savory background of the soup.

The step that matters

Skim off the grease before finishing. Fat from the goose rises to the surface during simmering and can make the clear broth greasy and cloudy if not removed before serving.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, onion, beef, garlic, celery, carrot, sugar):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Cuminfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, onion, beef, garlic, celery, carrot, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
