Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and body of the filling.
Butter
Adds richness and carries flavour into the sauce.
Flour
Thickens the milk or stock into a smooth, creamy sauce.
Milk or stock
Forms the liquid base that the flour thickens into a sauce.
Ham
Adds salty, savoury flavour to the filling.

The step that matters

Cook the flour into the butter before adding liquid. Cooking the flour briefly in the melted butter removes its raw taste and lets it thicken the liquid smoothly. Adding liquid too early or without stirring can leave lumps.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, ham, butter, flour, milk, lemon, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
