Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a quick oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare

  1. Remove the mutton from the tin and discard the fat.

  2. Boil the potatoes, then mash them with butter, milk, and seasoning.

  3. Slice the onions and fry them in the fat from the mutton.

Assemble and bake

  1. Butter a deep pie dish and line it with mashed potatoes.

  2. Layer the sliced mutton mixed with onions on top, well seasoned.

  3. Cover with a thick layer of mashed potatoes.

  4. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top and dot with small pieces of butter.

  5. Bake in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 20 minutes.
