Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to trap air and give the cake a tender, rich crumb.
Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure as they set in the oven.
Flour
Forms the main structure of the cake as the batter sets.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the batter so the cake rises and becomes light.
Walnuts
Add nutty flavour and a bit of texture throughout the crumb.

The step that matters

Creaming the butter and sugar. Beating them until light and fluffy traps air bubbles that expand in the oven. Under-creaming leaves a dense cake, while the batter should be mixed just enough once flour goes in to avoid toughening it.
