Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Small new carrots
Form the main body of the dish, cooked until tender and sweet.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the carrots and carrying flavour.
Parsley
Adds fresh, herbal aroma to the buttery coating.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the sweetness of the carrots.

The step that matters

Drain the water. Carrots left wet dilute the butter and lemon, so the sauce thins and slides off instead of clinging. Draining well lets the butter coat the carrots.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, parsley, lemon, pepper):

  1. Shallotfits about as well
  2. Carrotthe original
  3. Spinachfits less well
  4. Okrafits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, parsley, lemon, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
