Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cheshire or cheddar cheese
Provides the main flavour and the body of the filling.
Butter
Binds the cheese into a soft paste and keeps the filling moist.
Anchovy essence or paste
Adds a salty, savoury depth to the cheese filling.
White or brown bread
Forms the structure that holds the filling and gives each sandwich its shape.

The step that matters

Add enough butter to form a soft paste. Too little butter leaves the grated cheese crumbly and hard to spread, while too much makes the filling greasy and loose. The cheese should be worked until smooth so it holds together between the slices.
