Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fish
Flakes into the sauce and forms the main body of the dish.
Onions
Softened and sweetened by frying, they add body and mild sweetness to the sauce.
Apple
Its sweetness and softness balance the heat of the curry powder.
Cream or milk
Thickens with the flour and adds richness and a mellow texture to the sauce.
Curry powder
Supplies the spice aroma that defines the dish.

The step that matters

Frying the fish until brown. Dredging in flour and frying builds browned flavour and a coating that helps the fish hold together, so it is less likely to break into shreds during the long stew.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (fish, flour, cream, onion, lemon, egg, rice):

  1. Coconutfits better
  2. Avocadofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Applethe original
