What each ingredient does

Crabs
Provide the main body of the salad, supplying the sweet, tender meat that the dish is built on.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and creaminess, moistening the crab meat and binding it into a cohesive salad.
Lettuce
Forms a crisp, fresh bed under the crab, adding crunch and contrast to the soft meat.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add a firm, mild texture and richness as a garnish alongside the crab.

The step that matters

Pick out the crab meat carefully. Small shell fragments are easy to miss in the crevices and can ruin a bite. Breaking the crab apart gently keeps the delicate meat in larger, intact pieces, which gives a better texture.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (crab, egg):

  1. Asparagusfits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against crab, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
