Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold roast beef
Forms the main body of the hash and provides its meaty flavor.
All-purpose flour
Thickens the cooking liquid so the beef holds together rather than running off the toast.
Soup stock or water
Supplies the moisture that cooks the beef gently and carries its seasoning through the mixture.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth fat to the finished hash when water is used instead of stock.

The step that matters

Stir the flour into the meat before adding liquid. Flour mixed evenly through the chopped beef dissolves into the liquid without lumps. Simmering then thickens the mixture and cooks out the raw flour taste.
