Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hard-boiled eggs
Provide the main body of the salad, with firm, sliced whites and yolks as the filling.
Cream
Whipped until stiff, it adds richness and a light, airy texture to the dressing.
Mayonnaise sauce
Adds fat and creaminess, binding the layers and moistening the egg.
Lettuce
Adds crisp texture and freshness between the layers.
Toasted bread
Forms a crisp, sturdy base that holds the layers together.

The step that matters

Whip the cream until stiff. Cream must be whipped to stiff peaks before folding in; under-whipped cream stays runny and thins the dressing, while over-whipping turns it grainy and can curdle it.

Flavor stand-ins for the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, lettuce, beetroot, capers, bread, cream, sauce):

  1. Tarragonbetter flavor fit
  2. Parsleythe original
  3. Nutmegabout as good a flavor fit

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, lettuce, beetroot, capers, bread, cream, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
