What each ingredient does

Treacle or molasses
Provides the sugar that yeast ferments into alcohol and gives the beer its dark, sweet flavour.
Yeast or barm
Ferments the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide, making the drink fizzy and alcoholic.
