Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Salmon
The main fish, whose flesh is warmed and flavoured by the smoky fire.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the warm fish with a silky moisture.

The step that matters

Pouring the boiling water over the salmon. Hot water briefly firms and seasons the surface of the fish. Overexposure to heat can toughen the flesh and make it dry, so the pouring should be done only as many times as the method states.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (salmon, butter, lemon):

  1. Parsleythe original
  2. Capersfits about as well
  3. Dillfits about as well
  4. Thymefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against salmon, butter, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
