Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Vanilla pods
Provide the main flavor, which is infused into the water by boiling.
Loaf sugar
Adds sweetness and helps give the ice a smoother, softer texture when frozen.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the flavor and balances the sweetness.

The step that matters

Boiling and straining the vanilla water. Boiling extracts vanilla flavor and dissolves the sugar fully. Straining through a fine sieve removes the pounded pod fragments so the ice freezes smooth and free of grit.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vanilla, sugar):

  1. Figfits better
  2. Blueberryfits better
  3. Peachfits better
  4. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vanilla, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
