Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Brown sugar
Provides the sweetness and food for the yeast, and gives the beer its color and flavor.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol, making the drink fizzy.
Ginger
Adds the spicy aroma and sharp flavor that defines ginger beer.
Hops
Adds bitterness and aroma, and helps balance the sweetness.

The step that matters

Cooling the mixture before adding yeast. Yeast is killed by hot liquid, so the wort must be cool enough before adding it, or fermentation will fail to start.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, hops):

  1. Cinnamonfits about as well
  2. Gingerthe original
  3. Nutmegfits less well
  4. Clovefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, hops. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
