Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Provide fruit flavour and soft texture that sweetens as they cook.
Boiled rice
Forms the body of the pudding and absorbs liquid as it sets.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and set it into a custard-like texture when baked.
Milk or cream
Adds moisture and richness so the pudding stays tender.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and helps the apples brown lightly in the pan.
Sugar
Sweetens the dish and helps the apples caramelise slightly.

The step that matters

Baking the pudding. Eggs set as they heat, so baking too long or too hot can make the pudding dry or rubbery. Watch for a set centre rather than relying only on the timer.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, rice, milk, egg):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, rice, milk, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
