Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Venison
Provides the main meat flavour and body as it stews slowly into the broth.
Butter
Enriches the soup with fat, adding richness and a smooth mouthfeel.
Port or madeira wine
Adds acidity and depth of flavour as it simmers into the soup.
Celery
Contributes aromatic flavour and a vegetable base to the broth.

The step that matters

Incorporating the flour-coated butter. Butter rolled in flour must be stirred in while the soup is hot and kept moving, so the flour thickens the liquid evenly without lumps forming.

Swap the mace
