Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chickens
Provide the main meat, which becomes tender during the long, slow oven cooking.
Flour
Lightly coats the chicken, helping seasoning cling and contributing to browning and a thickened juice.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add firm, set texture and richness inside the pie.
Ham or bacon
Adds savoury, salty flavour and aroma to the filling.
Puff pastry
Forms a flaky, crisp top crust that browns in the oven.

The step that matters

Covering and baking the pie. The pastry must seal the dish well so steam and juices stay inside, keeping the chicken moist while the pastry rises and browns. Baking for the full time at the stated heat ensures the chicken cooks through.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, flour, nutmeg, pepper, egg, ham):

  1. Marjoramfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Turmericfits better
  4. White pepperthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, flour, nutmeg, pepper, egg, ham. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
