What each ingredient does

Tartaric acid
Supplies acidity that reacts with the soda to release carbon dioxide bubbles.
Aerated soda
Reacts with the acid to release carbon dioxide, which makes the drink fizz.

The step that matters

Mix the two solutions together and drink immediately. Carbon dioxide escapes from water quickly, so the fizz fades within minutes. Drinking right after mixing keeps most of the bubbles in the glass.
