What each ingredient does

Rice
Absorbs the stock as it cooks, becoming soft and creamy around the grains.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that coats the rice and carries flavor.
Stock
Supplies the liquid the rice absorbs, cooking it gradually into a creamy texture.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savory, salty depth and helps the finished rice feel creamy.
Saffron
Gives the rice its golden color and a distinctive floral aroma.

The step that matters

Adding the stock gradually. Adding the stock in portions lets the rice release starch and absorb liquid evenly, producing a creamy texture. Adding it all at once would leave the rice unevenly cooked and soupy or dry.
