What each ingredient does

Walnuts
The nuts are the item being stored and later softened and peeled for eating.
Sea sand
Surrounds the walnuts in each layer, keeping them separated while stored in the jar.

The step that matters

Keep the walnuts from touching in every layer. Walnuts pressed against each other can bruise or spoil where they touch, so separating each nut with sand helps the whole batch keep well.
