Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main meaty body and rich flavor of the soup as it stews.
Butter and flour
Form a roux that thickens the soup into a smooth, gravy-like body.
Fried onions
Add browned, sweet savory depth to the stock.
Bouillon
Adds concentrated savory flavor to the broth from the start.
Sherry
Adds acidity and aromatic depth to finish the soup.

The step that matters

Make the roux and add it to the soup. Butter and flour must be mixed smooth before adding, and stirred in gradually over heat so it thickens evenly without lumps or raw flour taste.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, flour, pepper, meat, butter, sauce, sherry):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Potatofits about as well
