Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Horseradish
Supplies the sharp, pungent heat that defines the sauce.
Brown gravy
Provides the savoury liquid base and body for the sauce.
Melted butter
Adds richness and a smoother, rounder mouthfeel.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that sharpens the flavour and balances the richness.

The step that matters

Heat the sauce by placing the bowl in a saucepan of boiling water.. Horseradish's pungency comes from volatile compounds that fade with prolonged or intense heat. Gentle indirect heating warms the sauce evenly and helps keep the butter from separating, preserving both flavour and texture.
