Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mushrooms
Provide moisture and bulk, giving the forcemeat a soft, moist texture.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a tender, moist texture.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set when cooked.

The step that matters

Poach the balls in simmering water. Gentle simmering cooks the egg-bound mixture through without violent bubbling, which can break up the balls or make them tough and rubbery.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mushroom, butter, pepper, nutmeg, lemon, egg):

  1. Parsleyfits better

Fit is the average pairing score against mushroom, butter, pepper, nutmeg, lemon, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
