Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mushrooms
Provide the main body and earthy flavour of the topping as they soften and release moisture.
Butter
Carries the mushrooms in cooking and adds richness, and browns the bread.
Flour
Thickens the mixture with the cooking juices and gravy, and helps it brown lightly.
Gravy or beef broth
Supplies liquid and savoury depth that forms the sauce around the mushrooms.
Bread
Gives a crisp, absorbent base that holds the mushroom mixture.

The step that matters

Stirring in the flour and browning it lightly. Flour must be cooked in the fat until it loses its raw taste before liquid is added. Stirring keeps it from scorching while it browns, and it then thickens the gravy smoothly when the liquid goes in.

Swap the mace
