Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cranberries
Provide the tart fruit flavor and the red color of the drink.
Fresh egg
Adds body and richness to the drink when mixed in off the heat.
Sherry
Adds aroma and a warm, fortified wine flavor.
Oatmeal
Lends a mild body and soft texture to the boiled liquid.

The step that matters

Do not warm the mixture after adding the egg. Heating an egg mixture after it is added can scramble the egg proteins, leaving the drink grainy and curdled instead of smooth.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lemon, sugar, sherry, egg, milk, rose):

  1. Cinnamonfits about as well
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Marjoramfits less well
  4. Thymefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against lemon, sugar, sherry, egg, milk, rose. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
