What each ingredient does

Macaroni
Thickens the soup when part of it is pulped through a sieve, giving body.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, silky texture to the soup.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savory, salty flavor and body as it melts into the soup.

The step that matters

Heat the mixture without boiling. Boiling a dairy-based soup with cream and cheese can cause it to curdle or separate, so it should only be heated gently.
