Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Forms the base that holds the toppings and crisps when fried.
Grated cheese
Melts into a rich, binding layer that gives the toast its savoury body.
Ham
Adds savoury, salty flavour and a chewy texture to the topping.
Butter
Adds richness and promotes browning and crisping during frying.

The step that matters

Fry without turning. Leaving the toasts undisturbed lets the butter-fried underside form a crisp, golden crust that holds the topping in place. Moving them early can tear the bread and dislodge the cheese.
