Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main meat flavour and, after slow stewing, becomes tender.
Bacon
Adds smoky, salty fat that flavours the gravy and the soup.
Onions
Add sweetness and savoury depth as they soften during stewing.

The step that matters

Stew slowly for four to five hours until the meat is tender. Low, slow heat breaks down the tough connective tissue in the meat, so it becomes tender instead of stringy. Rushing with high heat toughens the meat and leaves the soup thin.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, carrot, pepper):

  1. Celeryfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, onion, carrot, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
