Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Claret
Forms the wine base that gives the drink its body and fruity flavour.
Powdered sugar
Sweetens the drink and dissolves easily into the cold liquid.
Brandy
Adds strength and warmth, and is added late to keep its aroma.
Lemon rind
Contributes aromatic oils that add citrus fragrance and brightness.

The step that matters

Adding the brandy just before serving. Brandy's alcohol and aromatic compounds are volatile, so adding it late preserves its aroma and sharpness rather than letting them fade in the mixture.
