Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rump steak
Provides the main meat, which becomes tender with long, gentle simmering.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid into a smooth, lightly bodied sauce as it heats.
Butter
Adds fat for browning the steak and carries flavour into the stew.
Onions
Release sweetness and savoury flavour into the sauce as they cook.
Carrot
Adds natural sweetness and softens into the stew during simmering.
Turnip
Adds a mild, slightly sweet flavour and soft texture to the stew.

The step that matters

Gradually stir in the water until smooth. Adding the liquid slowly while stirring lets the flour disperse evenly, which prevents lumps and gives a smooth, well-thickened sauce.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turnip, carrot, butter, flour, pepper):

  1. Parsnipfits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Beetrootfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against turnip, carrot, butter, flour, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
