Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Arrowroot
Thickens the liquid into a smooth, clear gruel as it cooks and cools.
Butter
Adds richness and a rounded, mellow mouthfeel to the finished gruel.
Apples
Add natural sweetness and fruity flavour to the water-based apple variation.

The step that matters

Mix the arrowroot gradually with the liquid. Arrowroot clumps if added to hot liquid in one go. Whisking it smooth in cold or room-temperature liquid first lets starch grains disperse evenly before heating, so the gruel thickens without lumps.
