Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pearl barley
Softens as it simmers, thickening the soup and giving it body.
White broth
Provides the liquid base that the barley cooks in and absorbs.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, velvety texture to the finished soup.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a rounded, silky mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Stir until thoroughly hot, but do not let it boil. Once the cream is added, boiling can cause dairy to separate and curdle, leaving the soup grainy instead of smooth.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (barley, butter, cream, sugar, bread, pepper):

  1. Nutmegthe original
  2. Cinnamonfits about as well
  3. Celeryfits less well
  4. Parsleyfits less well
