Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Soften and sweeten as they cook, forming the body of the soup.
Bread crumb
Thickens the soup as it boils and breaks down, giving it body.
Milk
Adds richness and a mellow, creamy finish to the soup.
Butter
Adds fat and flavour, helping the onions soften gently in the pan.

The step that matters

Boil until tender, then rub through a sieve. The bread and onions must be fully softened before sieving; undercooked pieces will not pass through smoothly and leave a grainy texture.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, celery, butter, bread, milk, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, celery, butter, bread, milk, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
