Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold fowl
Provides the chicken flavour and meat that make up the body of the soup.
Ham or tongue
Adds savoury, meaty depth to the broth.
Flour
Thickens the broth slightly so it has more body.
Cream
Adds richness and a smoother, softer mouthfeel at the end.

The step that matters

Adding the cream. Cream should be added after the soup comes to a boil and not kept at a rolling boil for long. Prolonged hard boiling can cause dairy to separate and turn grainy, and it can thicken unevenly.
