Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean beef
Provides the main protein and meaty flavour once browned and simmered until tender.
Potatoes
Add starch that softens during simmering, thickening the stew slightly and adding body.
Carrot
Adds natural sweetness and colour to the stew as it cooks.
Turnip
Adds a mild, slightly peppery flavour and firm texture that holds up during simmering.

The step that matters

Browning the beef. Frying the beef until browned creates Maillard reactions that build deep savoury flavour. Pale, crowded meat steams instead, leaving the stew tasting flat.
