Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Marrow
Forms the edible shell that holds the filling and softens when boiled.
Breadcrumbs
Soak up the gravy and bind the filling so it holds together.
Cooked meat
Provides the savory body of the filling.
Gravy
Adds moisture and flavor to the breadcrumbs and to the basting liquid.
Flour (in the method)
Thickens the remaining gravy into a sauce.

The step that matters

Drain the marrow carefully. Boiled marrow is soft and fragile, and tearing the halves before stuffing leaves the filling exposed. Gentle handling keeps the shells intact to hold the filling during baking.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (meat, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Carrotfits better
