Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Provides the base that holds the topping and crisps in the butter.
English cheese
Melts over the toast to form a rich, gooey layer.
Ham
Adds savory, salty flavour and some chew to the topping.
Butter
Adds richness and promotes browning and crispness when frying.
Mustard
Adds sharp, tangy flavour that cuts through the rich cheese.

The step that matters

Fry without turning. Frying the toast in butter without turning lets the bottom brown and crisp while the topping stays on top. Moving the toast can dislodge the cheese and ham and break up the crust.
