What each ingredient does

Pudding powder
Thickens the liquid as its starch swells and sets when cooled.
Butter
Adds fat for a richer flavour and smoother mouthfeel.
Swiss milk (strawberry)
Adds strawberry flavour and sweetness along with milk solids for body.

The step that matters

Stir in the cold mixture quickly until thick and smooth. Starch granules swell and thicken only when heated. Adding the cold paste to boiling water while stirring disperses it evenly, which prevents lumps and a grainy set.

Swap the strawberry jam

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, strawberry, butter):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Peachfits better
  3. Bananafits better
  4. Strawberry jamthe original
