What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main body and protein of the salad, cooked until tender for easy chopping.
Celery
Adds crisp texture that contrasts with the soft chicken and dressing.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds moisture and richness, binding the chopped ingredients together.
Hard-boiled eggs
Adds soft, creamy texture and body to the salad.

The step that matters

Stir in the mayonnaise dressing gently and just before serving. Overmixing breaks up the chopped pieces and can make the salad mushy, while dressing too early lets the mixture release moisture and turn watery. Folding gently keeps the texture intact.

Swap the cucumber

The recipe marks cucumber as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, celery, egg):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Cucumberthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, celery, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
