  3. Gradually add the cream and mushroom liquor, stirring until thickened.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Melts to form the fat base that the flour is cooked into.
Flour
Thickens the sauce when cooked in the butter and then mixed with liquid.
Cream
Adds richness and body, thickening the sauce as it is combined.
Mushrooms
Provide the main flavour and texture of the sauce.
Mushroom liquor
Adds concentrated mushroom flavour to the liquid base of the sauce.

The step that matters

Adding the cream and liquor gradually. Adding liquid slowly while stirring keeps the flour evenly dispersed, so the sauce thickens smoothly without lumps.
