Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round beef
Forms the main body of the loaves and provides the meaty flavor and structure.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together and help the loaves hold their shape as they set.
Soda crackers
Absorb moisture and help bind the meat so the loaves stay tender rather than dry.
Suet
Adds fat that keeps the loaves moist and richly flavored during baking.

The step that matters

Allow to cool before slicing. Cooling lets the proteins and egg set and the juices settle, so the loaves hold together cleanly when sliced instead of crumbling or releasing liquid.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
